But 88 detainees were still refusing food as tensions remained high at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba where 300 men from 32 countries, including five Britons, have been kept in high security since January.Nearly two thirds of captives boycotted lunch yesterday and chanted “God is great” in Arabic after being incensed that two guards stripped a detainee of his turban during prayer.Wearing turbans had been outlawed for fear they could be used to conceal weapons. Some prisoners also pushed sheets, blankets, sleeping mats and other items through the small openings in the chain link walls of their cells in protest, said Marine Major Stephen Cox, the detention mission spokesman. It follows several days of growing tension among the detainees caused by uncertainty about what is going to happen to them, he said.Brig Gen Mike Lehnert, the Marine commanding Camp X Ray, addressed the prisoners by loud speaker last night in an attempt to answer their concerns.”He told them at this point he could not to tell them how long they will be here or what will happen to them in the future,” Maj Cox said. But Gen Lehnert assured the detainees they would be “judged fairly” when the time comes. He said they would be allowed to wear turbans, but the guards would reserve the right to inspect them at any time. The military would also respect detainees’ religion, their observance of their religion, and the Koran, he said. The hunger strike started after two military guards ordered an inmate to remove a turban he donned during prayers on Tuesday. When the inmate repeatedly refused the guards shackled him and then stripped off the turban, Major Cox said.Medics have been monitoring the protesting prisoners and are prepared to feed them intravenously if needed, Cox said.Amnesty International said the protest “highlights the dangers of the legal limbo into which the prisoners have been thrown”.Following protests from human right groups, the US Government said last month that Taliban and al Qaida suspects would be treated in line with the Geneva convention. But the White House has refused to grant Camp X Ray inmates prisoner of war status and denied them legal representation.
He mentioned to me about a friend he had when he was a child. Him and this friend entered boot camp together and they stormed the beach together. That same kid was cut in half standing next to my grandfather by a machine gun. You can almost taste the cheerfulness in the air walking along the frozen sidewalks in downtown Chicago. Christmas shoppers are engulfed in warm puffy coats with scarves wrapped around their necks. They walk along the Magnificent Mile while the sound of jingle bells from the horse pulled carriages linger and intertwine with blaring of taxi horns..
